The Rise of Therapy Speak
If you've searched for relationship counselling,
online therapy, anxiety therapy or mental health support lately, you've probably come across content explaining psychological terms. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Mental health awareness matters.
Therapy has helped millions of people understand themselves better. The problem begins when every human experience starts looking like a diagnosis. Not every disagreement is emotional abuse. Not every selfish person is a narcissist. Not every uncomfortable feeling is trauma.
Why Are We So Obsessed With Labels?
Because labels create certainty. And certainty feels good. Especially in a generation struggling with anxiety, overthinking and information overload. If I can label something, I can feel in control of it.
But life rarely works that way. Relationships are messy. Families are messy. Marriages are messy. Friendships are messy. Sometimes people disappoint us without being toxic. Sometimes we disappoint others without being narcissistic.
Self-Awareness Has Become Performance
Many people seeking therapy today aren't lacking awareness.
They're drowning in it.
They know:
- Their attachment style
- Their childhood wounds
- Their triggers
- Their patterns
- Their coping mechanisms
Yet they still feel anxious. Why?
Because understanding yourself is not the same thing as experiencing life. You can analyse every relationship you've had and still struggle to trust people. You can understand your anxiety and still feel anxious.
What Therapy Is Actually Supposed To Do
Therapy isn't supposed to turn you into a walking psychology textbook. It's supposed to help you become more flexible, more resilient and more present. The goal isn't to diagnose every moment. The goal is to participate in your own life. Sometimes healing means understanding. Sometimes healing means putting the labels down and living.
Final Thoughts
Mental health language has helped countless people. But there is a difference between awareness and obsession. When every experience becomes something to diagnose, life starts feeling like a case study instead of an adventure. And maybe that's why so many of us feel exhausted. We know all the words. We're forgetting how to play.
